A true gentleman in Marseille

La Gazette Abracadabrante no. 3 - February 2000

On Friday 21st May 1999, we welcomed M. Stone, DAVID STONE in conference.  To be perfectly honest, previous to this, I did not know very much about this magician, except that he already had two videos on Coin magic to his name, and that he was young.  So I went to this conference with an open mind, with the intention of having a good evening bearing in mind that...coin magic is not my cup of tea.  I do four or five coin tricks, but I have a few hurdles to cross before becoming a specialist.  I must admit that I have truly discovered a 27-year-old magician who specialises in “table hopping”.

The first part of his conference is very good, but the second part, devoted to table hopping is a choice cut.  We get the impression that the magician really knows what he is talking about and especially about what he has experienced himself.  He has lots of good ideas on how to approach people whilst they are eating.  He works in such a way so as to produce the psychological effect of inducing the audience to give him a tip at the end of his performance.  He has no qualms about jumping on the table to show us the position of his feet, which is important in emphasising his illusions ( he has the advantage of being young, of course, but also a great desire to share his knowledge which he has acquired on the job, with others).

It’s a shame that David does not linger for longer on his ideas regarding theatrical gesture when applied to performing close-up magic standing up.  If you have the chance to see him at  work, take time to position yourself so that you not only see his tricks, but also his body ( not like that! I like magic and beautiful girls! Just like him! ) and I’m sure you won’t regret it.  He knew how to create an absolutely Dantesque character : everything is planned to enhance his magic to the maximum and avoid problems before they arise.  I am not going to tell you any more because he would be more than pleased to do that himself, or even better, at one of his up-coming conferences.  And if I entitled this article the way that I did, it is because M. Stone is a true gentleman.  It leads us to ponder on why God gives some people such a hard time .  But where some people would only be cold and angry, David is communicative and warm-hearted.  He really likes what he does and it is with great pleasure that I leave you with the card trick to explore, kindly sent by  David for La Gazette Abracadabrante.  Ladies and Gentleman : David Stone!
